Islands in the Indian Ocean – Life in an Endangered Paradise (German Documentary, ZDF)
Director & Reporter: Norms Odenthal
Broadcaster: ZDF (Germany)
Islands in the Indian Ocean – Life in an Endangered Paradise is a moving German documentary that explores the lives, challenges, and resilience of people living in some of the world’s most beautiful yet fragile environments: Seychelles, Mauritius, and the Maldives. Filmed by ZDF reporter Norms Odenthal, the documentary captures how climate change, coral bleaching, and the COVID-19 pandemic are reshaping island life, while also celebrating the individuals striving to preserve these endangered paradises.
The film follows compelling personal stories: Anna, a conservation manager working on coral restoration and turtle protection in the Seychelles; Hans-Joachim, a 63-year-old adventurer in Mauritius whose life is filled with paragliding, kite surfing, and art sponsorship; Dinesh, a Mauritian jockey on the verge of winning the island’s Grand Championship horse racing title; and Amir, a Maldivian entrepreneur rebuilding his business in the wake of the pandemic. Each story paints a vivid picture of how people across the Indian Ocean islands are adapting, innovating, and fighting to keep their way of life intact.

Why the Indian Ocean for Environmental Documentaries?
The Seychelles, Mauritius, and the Maldives are among the most beautiful but vulnerable places on Earth. Rising sea levels, coral bleaching, and global tourism pressures make them critical sites for environmental storytelling. By working with Identical Media, ZDF was able to capture intimate conservation stories, cultural traditions, and dramatic landscapes across the islands, while also accessing the Mauritius Film Rebate Scheme offering up to 40% rebate on qualifying expenditures. With Mediavision supplying world-class equipment, this project demonstrated how Mauritius and its neighboring islands can host high-caliber international documentary productions.
