Post-Production in Mauritius
Post-production is the manipulation of the raw images obtained from a film shoot and involves workflows of its own.
It most definitely determines the final visual and sonic outcome of a film production.
Our DIT creates a bridge between production and post-production, to avoid technical mishaps and ensure the delivery of footage which can be handled with ease by editors.
The editing process consists of two stages: online and offline editing. During offline editing, which happens first, all the footage is logged.
This happens daily or sometimes after the whole film shoot, depending on production.
After logging, the images are synced with sound.
The footage is then assembled. The term “cut” is commonly used during this process.
Once the film is assembled, online editing takes place. Offline editors need to ensure the smooth running of the online process by adhering to the online requirements. They then hand over the assemblies and data to the online editors.
This step involves color-correction, color-grading, sound design, VFX inter alia.
All of these creative touches, subtle or radical, contribute to making the final cut more cinematic.
Most international films shot in Mauritius are edited abroad. Nevertheless, the island is home to editors who have worked on films and TV series on a professional scale.
Hardware-wise, post-production studios require powerful processors, calibrated computer screens and decent sound monitors as well as storage space which cannot be neglected.
Our industry-level editors are “connoisseurs” in Adobe Premiere Pro, Davinci Resolve and Final Cut, for most. We hope that Avid will be introduced into our film industry in Mauritius in the near-future too.
The Agent, a South African TV series co-produced by Identical Pictures, is the first international TV series to have been shot and edited in Mauritius this year. It will be screened on Canal+ by the end of 2018.
The film incentives set up by the Mauritian government incorporate post-production, including 3D, so that the rebate also applies to production companies who wish to complete post-production for their films on the island.
